Web Search For A Planet: The Google Cluster Architecture

Yeah, it’s a geeky topic that probably 98% of you aren’t interested in. But this is just an incredible architecture. I work with Oracle Parallel Server and RAC systems, and it takes some big honking machines to run it.

The fact that Google is able to do what they do on the equivalent of Pentium III class machines is just… phenomenal.

It’s been an incredibly hectic few days. So, instead of actually trying to document everything, let me give you the lowdown:

- Spent most of the day Saturday cleaning out the van and planting flowers. It’s amazing how many cheerios can accumulate in a van.

- Spent some time last night putting out Sevin Dust to kill slugs who were eating said flowers.

- My great aunt, Nellie Walker, passed away early Sunday morning. She was laid to rest today. She was my grandmother’s youngest sister.

- I’ve decided that the people who are remodeling my Mother-In-Law’s house are completely incompetent (well, except for my Dad, who finished up her cabinets on time - there’s a concept!!!).

- Tonight, my folks & grandmother came up and went with us to our annual ‘Hunter-Street-Night-At-The-Met’ to watch the Barons play.

- Twenty-five cent hot-dogs and Baptists make for a lethal combination.

- I dove through some seats and snagged my first-ever foul ball. I’m still grinning ear-to-ear about that.

- I’m trying to earn some extra cash on Ebay. I sold a hard drive last week, and turned right around and spend it on a new Scanner (the Radio Shack Pro-95 Dual Trunking model, in case you’re keeping score).

- School’s out for the boys, and Amanda purchased a membership in our ‘neighborhood’ pool today.

- Work has me BTTW.

- Any spare time has me converting the CAOUG website from this to this.

- There’s an outside chance we may get to visit some good friends next week.

- I never won a James Spann bobble-head.

Wow, I’m tired.

We just got in from Tuscaloosa, where we spent the latter part of Sunday and today. Ate way too much Barbecue, and got to see a lot of our family. A nice bonus was getting to watch too much #!@** Osbournes with Dana.

2. What brand of toilet paper do you prefer? I have no preference, although the Kleenex Cottonelle seems to show up in our house a lot.

3. What brand(s) of shoes do you wear? Let’s see - Saucony, Dockers, Bass, Land’s End, and some sort fo really cool sandals that I found at Academy sports.

4. What brand of soda do you drink? Diet Coke, although I am quickly becoming hooked on Moutain Dew Livewire.

5. What brand of gum do you chew? I don’t chew much gum, but if you’ve seen me recently there’s a good chance that I had a package of David’s Sunflower Seeds with me.

Sorry, I just felt like venting last night.

Have you ever witnessed an act where one person was so completely selfish that they would block out almost everyone out of their life, irregardless of the consequences?

I have. And I am completely repulsed by what I’ve seen. It makes me want to vomit, bless out, curse out, and beat the ever-living fool out of the perpetrator.

And the sad thing is that I can’t do a single thing about it. We’d all be better off talking to a brick wall.

I’m knocking the dust off of my feet.
