Martin Luther shook things up, 490 years ago.
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.
Today, that’s me. I had today’s meme questions all planned out, but at the last minute decided to change my mind. So if you’ve been checking all day, waiting in suspense for the questions to appear - they won’t. I’ll exercise humility and just let you know that I’ve been way too busy with work this week and the Upwards celebration tonight (which, while I did win a door prize, I did not win a haircut as is currently rumored) to get the questions posted.
1) They are currently playing IT, which is one of the coolest things that XM does once each year. They start in the 1950s, and chronologically play every pop song that ever hit the charts. XM is currently grooving in the sixties.
2) XM always devotes channels to Christmas music. This year is no different. But they’re starting them on November 1st. If I were to listen to Christmas music for 55 straight days, I’d snap a tree over some jolly fat man’s head.
See Charles “Chuck” Schumer, D. NY. Schumer was instrumental in getting the Brady Bill passed, and has been a relentless opponent of the second amendment. He voted to allow wrongful death lawsuits against firearm manufacturers, from the families of victims of gun violence. The implied intent is that the lawsuits would cause firearms manufacturers to shut down.
Remington manufactures firearms. They have a plant that is in Schumer’s district. Remington was purchased by a hedge firm in April 2007. There was much speculation about whether the NY plant would be shut down. So of course Schumer was excited about this, right?
“You can tell the guys at Remington I’ll keep them here,” Schumer said to Ilion Mayor Mark Cushman. “I recognize that Remington Arms is one of the county’s major employers, and I promise to do everything in my power to make sure the plant remains here in Herkimer County.”
Schumer added that he is familiar with Cerberus Capital Management, which purchased Remington Arms in April.
“When I meet with the hedge funds, I’ll lobby for our local companies,” the senator said. “I am familiar with the Cerberus management team, and when I meet with them I’ll tell them not only how important it is to keep the Ilion plant open, but to think about expanding their operations here in Herkimer County. The people at Remington have a friend in me, and I promise to work on their behalf. Just let me know what they need.”
“The people at Remington have a friend in me” - Actions speak louder than words.
Virtue #4: Temperance (self-restraint; Classically defined as governing natural appetites for the pleasure of senses according to the bounds of reason; opposes gluttony).
Rest easy - I too, will avoid the obvious question. But the questions will still revolve around food and drink.
1. Do you exercise regularly? If so, what do you do?
2. Have you ever eaten out at a restaurant, and received such poor service that you never returned to it?
3. When shopping and/or choosing what to eat, do you use the nutritional information as a guide, or is it just an afterthought?
4. Have you ever enjoyed a food immensely, only to later read the ingredients, and swear to never touch the food again?
5. Dairy Queen Dipped Ice Cream Cone: Chocolate, Cherry, or Butterscotch?
And on a quick side note before my answers are revealed: If you like Popcorn, there’s still time to order some from the McGraw cub scouts! Shoot me an email and I’ll give you the details.
I’d honestly planned on taking a break from blogging this weekend, but then I saw this video and absolutely had to share it. The music’s a little cheesy, but stick with it. Trust me: It’s worth it.
There’s no Friday 5 posted today. I’m not going to continue the 7 contrary virtues until Monday, so I guess you’ll be meme-less until Monday.
Hope you all have a good weekend! We’ll be wrapping up football and soccer seasons, and then enjoying Evangel’s Fall Festival on Saturday. It’s going to be a busy weekend, but it should be a lot of fun.
But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:6, ESV)
