BIR, RIP

Today, demolition crews started working on demolishing the Birmingham International Raceway. Well, sorta:

BIR demolition begins

This video really saddens me. I remember my parents taking me to BIR when I was a kid to see the races. It was some of the best clean fun you could have. If memory serves me correctly, it was still hosting races up until the very end.

The Birmingham king mayor, Larry Langford, was instrumental in a plan to tear down one of the oldest race tracks in the USA, and replace it the “Fair Park project”, whihc will include a natatorium with an Olympic-sized pool and an indoor track arena that will allow state high schools to once again hold indoor track competition.

Funny, I didn’t realize there was a big push for indoor track competition in Alabama.

I’m also sure that it’s mere coincidence that the new project is being built in FairField, which is where LaLa was previously the mayor.

It’s a good thing that there are no other buildings in Fairfield that could have been demolished, instead.

Happy Birthday, Amanda

A Third Child

(Bet that headline got your attention, didn’t it?)

You know, I’d contemplate having a third child, just for the opportunity to pass these out instead of cigars:

iPhone Cameras

I don’t have an iPhone, so I can’t verify this for myself. But apparently, the camera built into the iPhone has some sort of cheap sensor in it that, instead of exposing a picture all at once, it scans the image from left to right. That doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense until you see pictures like this:

Pretty strange, eh?

Pearl Harbor?

Illinois’ embattled but defiant governor turned to the history books to describe the emotional strain on him and his family, comparing his arrest last month to Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.

“Dec. 9 to my family, to us, to me, is what Pearl Harbor Day was to the United States,” Gov. Rod Blagojevich told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday. “It was a complete surprise, completely unexpected. And just like the United States prevailed in that, we’ll prevail in this.”

There’s a Biblical term for that: Bologna.

You know, my GrandFather fought in WWII. Amanda’s GrandFather fought in WWII. Lots of good men fought and died in foreign lands because of the December 7 attack. For Blagojevich to compare his arrest to December 7, 1941, absolutely infuriates me. It continues to show me what little class the man has. Illinois folks… What were you thinking?
