Hey, Buddy… You’re Podcasting*

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

In celebration of Pastor Jodey putting the Camp Branch Baptist Church sermons online – the BranchCast I decided to go through my iTunes library and export the lists of Podcasts that I’m currently subscribed to. You’ll see them in the Podcasts category on the left.

Now, this is not everything that I listen to. It’s just what I’ve enjoyed so much that I subscribed to them. There are a couple of shows that I listen to periodically (WeatherBrains and Gun Nuts – The Next Generation, to name a few) that fall into that category.

Tastes change over time, but hopefully I’ll remember to update the Podcast links periodically.

(* Apologies to Rick and Bubba for mangling their infamous “Hey, Buddy… You’re Broadcasting” line.)

Welcome to Doomsday

Texas Sect Leader: Doomsday Begins Next Thursday, June 12

Nuclear war will begin next Thursday, June 12, or sooner, according to the latest prediction of self-proclaimed prophet Yisrayl “Buffalo Bill” Hawkins, the founder of a religious sect in Abilene, Texas.

Granted… He’s still got 12 hours by my clock, but I’m a little skeptical, given his prior track record…

Unfortunately for Hawkins, it is not the first time he predicted the outbreak of nuclear war.

Most recently, Hawkins set Sept. 12, 2006 as the beginning of the end.

His followers produced an on-line video with a countdown to doomsday.

In Kenya, hundreds of his followers actually hid in basement bomb shelters and donned gas masks on the date.

They went home in humiliation when there was no war.

Hmm. Maybe he’s up to something. When in doubt, follow the money.

Other former members say they are required to buy doomsday food and supplies from a company that Hawkins owns personally, Life Nutrition Products.

“Everything that he preaches has to do with people buying something,” said former House of Yahweh elder David Als of New York City.

Like many of the his followers, Als actually legally changed his last name to Hawkins because he became convinced that only those named Hawkins would be saved.

C’mon… Hawkins? Is that buried in a Bible Code someplace? He’s probably glad that we don’t live in Old Testament times.

The First Church of Oprah

Friday, April 4th, 2008

I been wanting to post/rant about Oprah’s new found religious movement the other other day. Today, however, I read a post at JustTalkingItUp by “Uncle Bud”. It’s excellent. I highly recommend that you check out his post.

I’ve never been a big fan of boycotts, especially by religious organizations. But, honestly… Even if I were an Oprah-watcher, there’s no way that I could continue having anything to do with her, her shows, or her books, after listening/reading about how she’s distorting a holy God to conform to her own wishes and images.

HSBC – Online!

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

While I’m sure that I’m not the first person to blog about this… But Our Church has started posting video of our worship services online. As of right now, there are archives back to September 30, 2007.

If you have a few minutes, check it out!

Update: Okay, so I was out of town on 11/11/2007, and that happened to be the day that Caleb was presented with his first-grade Bible. I checked the video and, unfortunately, that part of the service was left out. But I thought that I’d watch it while baby-sitting a database copy. And then I noticed, about 18 minutes into it, where I see a certain friend of mine snuggle up to her husband.

Note to self: Sit behind the cameras from now on. :)

How my mind works

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Just an insight into the warped mind that is Brian McGraw’s…

Sunday night, my Biblical Theology is discussing 2 Kings. The author, whose book we’re studying, makes the statement that there are no theocracies today. I, of course, object to his statement. There are no Christian theocracies that I’m aware of, but there are plenty of of non-Christian theocracies in the world (i.e., Saudi Arabia, Iran, etc.).

So as we move on to the next point, my mind starts to wander…What if America was a Christian theocracy? My mind wanders to my friend Jodey, who has recently returned from Israel, and his comments about minarets. I wonder, “Would we have minarets set up, directing people to pray?” My next thought is, “I wonder what the city would look like with them set up all across the area?”

Then I realized that, at least in the South, we do have objects set up all across the landscape. When they sound, I can guarantee that the number of prayers in the surrounding areas increase dramatically:

Tornado Sirens: The minarets of the South. :)
